There's always something happening at the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium - the only facility of it's kind in the world. The Dubuque County Historical Society hosts a number of special events throughout the year at the museum, at it's three historic properties, and throughout the community.



May 30, 2008 Captain's Ball
The National Rivers Hall of Fame invites guests to feast on the sights, sounds and tastes of one of the world's greatest rivers, the Mississippi. This is a red carpet, black tie optional dinner and celebration.


May 31, 2008 At the Lead Mines
A rich demonstration of Dubuque's founding by the first legal lead miners in Iowa. Historians, artifacts and the historical role players will recreate the lead miner's search for lead, their living quarters, food and culture.


June 1, 2008 Dubuque's First Day: The Great Lead Rush
Citizens will recreate the lead rush, where 60 or more lead miners raced across the Mississippi in canoes, rafts and rowboats to stake their claim.

June 28, 2008 marks the 5th year of the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium!


July 4, 2008 Ice Cream Social at Mathias Ham House
44th Annual Ice Cream Social - Visitors can tour the Ham House in its Victorian splendor, listen to live entertainment, wander the grounds and enjoy a family fun day.


July 19, 2008 Ding Darling Day
Conservation partners join us for free exhibitions in the Boat Yard Plaza. Hands-on activities include fish printing, sun printing, and other animal programs.


August 2, 2008 - Saturday Taste of Dubuque
The 13th annual Taste of Dubuque moves to a Saturday this year. More than two dozen food vendors will satisfy and craving. Live music, great food, beverages and children's activities will fill the Port of Dubuque.


September 20-21, 2008 Native American Days
Artisans, living history demonstrators, fishers, clammers and Native Americans will celebrate folk arts and cultural richness of traditional crafts related to the Mississippi River and the fur and lead trade. Boat building and River Harvest demonstration.

Join us for a History Walk to celebrate the historic properties of the Dubuque County Historical Society.


October 26, 2008 Trick-or-Treat
The public is invited to walk the decks of the William M. Black and esplore the Museum's Boat Yard visiting a variety of characters giving out treats.


November 1, 2008 Patrick O'Connor Lives
A live theatrical presentation by the first person to be hanged in Iowa, in 1834. This event captures the drama of Iowa's territorial days before statehood when citizens appointed the judge, jury, defense and prosecuting attorneys.


November 15, 2008 General Grant Visits the Ryan House
General Grant tied his horse to the hitching rail in front of the Ryan House and visited his friend William "Hog" Ryan. Bus tours of Civil War sites such as soldiers' graves at Linwood Cemetery and Grant's Home in Galena will be available.


December 7, 2008 Christmas on the Frontier
Visitors will be able to enjoy many of the traditional aspects of an early American holiday experience. It's an entertaining and educational experience for the young and not so young.
