Come Home for the Holidays

Celebrate an old-fashioned holiday at the Mathias Ham Historic Site through a series of special events leading up to Christmas. Home for the Holidays will feature specially curated tours highlighting holiday traditions of the Victorian era with weekly crafts, entertainment, and specialty activities. These events are made possible with support from the City of Dubuque Arts and Culture Special Projects Grant program.

Request for Submissions
The Dubuque County Historical Society is seeking photography submissions for a new exhibit, Dubuque Traditions: A Photographic Experience. 

This exhibit will explore photograhs that capture traditions among families and our community that deepen connections between generations and foster a sense of belonging. 

Please send submissions to Victoria Cote at vcote@rivermuseum.com or by mail to 350 E 3rd St, Dubuque, Iowa 52001 with the attention to Victoria Cote. 

Please note that physical photo submissions will not be returned. 

Deadline for submissions is November 15. 

Home for the Holidays

Held every Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 30 through Dec. 22 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Home for the Holidays will feature costumed guides sharing Christmas traditions of the Victorian era. Each weekend will explore a different theme. Sleigh rides, caroling, and a visit from Santa are included in the family fun. A full schedule of events can be found at rivermuseum.com/events. Admission is just $7.50 for adults and $4 for children 3-17. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door. Members of the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium receive free admission.

Candlelight Tours

Candlelight Tours will be offered Saturday, Dec. 7 and Saturday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Evening Candlelight Tours will provide visitors a rare opportunity to tour the Ham House by candlelight, while learning about the architectural and historical significance of the home. Registration is limited to 20 per tour and tickets are required in advance. Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for children.

About the Mathias Ham Historic Site

The Mathias Ham Historic Site, operated by the Dubuque County Historical Society, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic property includes the Mathias Ham House, Iowa’s oldest log cabin, the Humke Schoolhouse, and a historic granary.
