Transportation Fund FAQ

Transportation Fund FAQs

The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium is honored to offer transportation funds to regional schools, excluding colleges, thanks to the generous support of the John Deere Foundation.  Grant dollars may be used to fund field trips to the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium or the Mathias Ham Historic Site.  The grant cycle follows the academic calendar (August – June), and funds are offered on a first come, first served basis.

Eligibility & Requirements

All schools in the tri-state area are eligible for funding.  Please note:

  • The grant cycle will end in June or when all funds are allocated.
  • A maximum of two grants – each up to $250 – may be awarded per school.
  • Participating groups must include at least 15 students.
  • Groups may choose from self-guided or guided tour options.  Self-guided options are available daily.  Guided tours are available Tuesday – Thursday.
  • Group visits are booked first come, first served basis.  April through June is the busiest time for school visits, with Thursday being the most requested day of the week.  We recommend planning your visit as soon as possible to reserve your preferred date and time.
  • An evaluation form and transportation bill/receipt must be submitted following the field trip to receive payment.

Where should I send the completed application?

The completed application will be automatically emailed directly to mwersinger@rivermuseum.com

How are grants selected?

All grant requests are reviewed by our staff and awarded on a first come, first served basis.  Grants are available until funding has been depleted or the school year ends. Once this occurs, the grant cycle will end and a notification will be posted on the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium’s website.

How will I be notified if I have or have not been awarded funding?

Please allow three weeks for the application process.  Applicants will be notified of their award status via email.

How are grants paid?

Grant recipients will receive a check made payable to their school and sent by US Mail.  Payments will be processed following the field trip and upon submission of a completed evaluation and transportation bill/receipt.  This can take up to two weeks, though every effort will be made to process scholarships in a timely manner.

Award Terms & Conditions

Completion of the scholarship application does not constitute a confirmed reservation. Confirmed reservations will be in the form of a contract and must be signed and returned. Field trip visits are dependent on availability and are scheduled on a first come, first served basis.

As outcome measurements are vital to fund these opportunities, we ask that you consider the following at the completion of your visit:

  • Completion of teacher survey after your program
  • Group thank you message to the sponsoring organization containing student/child quotes and teacher commentary regarding group’s visit/experience
